Maradona (Accumulated)

Pedro Mairal

I have always been obsessed with the famous goal Maradona scored against England. I never get tired of watching it over and over again. There, Diego turns like a little eel, he turns away from trouble, little squat man , like an Amazon hunter, dodging plants, jumping mats, intrudes, getting through the hole of European tempo. Cheeky, runs like a child. He is a wity wily and his rivals try to stop him like outraged adults. Maradona runs like an outlaw, avoiding the moral righteousness of the northern hemisphere. He drains through, he filters and yet often he doesnt touch the ball, he lets her go, he releases her till getting her safe to the net. He passes the ball to himself, to the same self he´ll find forward, more ahead jumping over the defender after dribbling, the change of pace. Our hero rushes, falls, and the arquitects of the fair play cathedral  have no more remedy than to bring him down. But he is like a rascal that robbed, takes his booty away and keeps on the run. The brits seem in plaster, playing at some other game, as if the rules of the sport they once invented have suddenly been changed. They can´t understand nor foresee latin individualism; Maradona never passes the ball to Valdano, the companion next to him. It all takes 9 seconds. He scores. he even eludes the cameraman. Not even his teammates can reach and hug him.
